  Thallus epilithic, to c. 1.5 mm thick, red-brown to bronze-coloured, glossy, rimose-areolate, epruinose, covered by an epinecral layer to c. 30 µm thick. Photobiont trebouxioid; algal layer continuous, well developed; calcium oxalate crystals absent. Vegetative propagules not seen. Ascomata conspicuous, blackish, to c. 1.5 mm diam., ±rounded, urceolate, lecideoid in appearance, solitary, immersed. Disc visible from above, blackish brown, epruinose. Proper exciple absent; instead the ascoma with a pseudoexciple of degenerating brown-pigmented hymenium, non-amyloid. Hymenium 90–120 µm thick, not inspersed, moderately conglutinated; paraphyses unbranched, the apices not thickened; lateral paraphyses and columella absent. Epihymenium hyaline to pale brown, egranulose. Asci 1–2-spored; tholus initially thick, thin at maturity. Ascospores muriform, broadly ellipsoidal, with ±rounded ends, hyaline to brown, non-amyloid, 28–42 × 14–23 µm, with 5–12 × 2–5 locules; locules ±rounded to angular; septa thick, regular; ascospore wall thin to thick, thinly halonate; endospore thick. Condiomata not seen.
CHEMISTRY: No lichen compounds detected by TLC.
     
  Occurs on exposed, siliceous rocks in W.A., S.A., N.S.W. and Vic., often is somewhat eutro-phicated sites. This cosmopolitan species is most common in montane habitats.
